Medicare Scams for Personal Information

New Medicare numbers are being issued.  The new Medicare Number is being called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier, which is replacing the current Social Security-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on Medicare health insurance cards.  New Medicare beneficiaries will receive the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier first.

In preparation, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services advised of that it will never call a beneficiary uninvited and ask for personal or private information to get their new Medicare Number and card. Medicare is concerned that scam artists may try to get personal information, such as your current Medicare Number, by contacting a beneficiary by telephone and ask about the person’s new card. If you are contacted by telephone or otherwise by someone asking for your Medicare number, money, or is threatening to cancel your health benefits do not give any information and please call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
